How to Push Out a Speaker Cone

How to Push Out a Speaker Cone thumbnail
Speaker grilles or cloths should always be used to avoid damage.

Speaker dents in the center of the speaker cone are fairly commonplace for units not guarded by protective grilles or speaker cloth. This center section is actually a dust cap for the internal voice coil and is glued to the larger surrounding speaker cone. Pulling out dents from the speaker cone dust cap is safer and easier than pushing, as removal of the cap from the cone and accessing the dent from the rear would be necessary and is a job for professionals. Because the dust cap's primary purpose is to prevent debris from entering the speaker's delicate internal voice coil, it has little effect on sound quality even if dented.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove a strip of masking tape approximately 4 to 6 inches in length. Any medium-tack tape will do but avoid using those with strong adhesives such as duct tape to limit the chance of weakening the dust cap to speaker cone glue bond.

    • 2

Apply the tape to the dust cap applying light pressure to avoid making the dent more pronounced. Rubbing the surface of the tape with a fingernail or coin will often help the adhesive stick more aggressively to the cap surface.

    • 3

Grasp one end of the tape and slowly pull from the dust cap. Wide or shallow dents can usually be removed in a single attempt, but you may repeat the process if necessary for smaller or deeper dents.

Tips & Warnings

  • An alternative or companion process to using masking tape is to use a drinking straw, applying it to the dented area and sucking on the straw to draw the dent out.

  • Avoid using other methods such as vacuums, needle insertion and follow-up patching, as these operations are best left to professional speaker repair shops to avoid further damage.
