How to Build a Pigeon Latrine

Pigeon waste is a serious issue that can cause major structural damage on building exteriors.

Soft feathers, calming coos and warm brown eyes don't generally come to mind when discussing pigeons. Instead come thoughts of disease, filth-laden sidewalks and excrement in excess. Pigeons have a uniquely designed digestive systems which allow for fluent and indiscriminate release of their bowels. This is, to say the least, dirty and unhealthy -- not to mention unattractive for cars and building exteriors. With the right materials, you can create a designated latrine area for your local feathered friends, and keep your window sills and rooftops clean.

Things You'll Need

• Plastic or metal lining
• Cleaning agents
• Cleaning supplies
• Pigeon spikes or bird netting

Instructions

1. Put on cleaning gear -- including goggles, gloves and an apron or material to protect your clothing. Clean the affected wall or sill area thoroughly, to rid it of any existing bird droppings.

2. Apply the bird netting or pigeon spikes to the sill or ledges on which you don't want the pigeons to defecate. Leave open the area which you've designated as an appropriate latrine area.

3. Mount the plastic or metal sheet to the area that you've deemed acceptable for the pigeons to roost. Attach it securely to the wall or ledge, but ensure that it's able to be removed for periodic cleaning. The birds will naturally gravitate toward this area.

Tips & Warnings

• Bird droppings are acidic and full of germs, so wash properly after cleaning affected areas.
