How to Make Your Own Fabric Hair Bun Wrap

Cover your hair bun with a homemade wrap.

Using a fabric bun wrap to cover a bun is a simple way to make the bun appear more decorative and elegant. However, commercially produced bun wraps are often costly, poorly constructed and are sometimes made from cheap or unattractive materials. One alternative is to make your own fabric bun wraps using materials you buy from a craft or fabric supply store. This enables you to make the bun wraps using nicer materials at a lower cost.

Things You'll Need

• Stretchy fabric
• Scissors
• Straight pins
• Sewing needle
• Thread
• Elastic ribbon, 1/4 inch
• Cardboard
• Safety pins

Instructions

1. Cut a circle from stretchy fabric to measure 6 inches in diameter.

2. Fold the edges of the circle over by 1/8 inch, then again by another 1/8 inch. Pin the edges in place using straight pins.

3. Sew around the pinned edges using a sewing needle and thread.

4. Cut a piece of 1/4-inch elastic ribbon to measure 5 inches long, then stretch the elastic ribbon so that it measures 8 inches long.

5. Pin the stretched-out elastic onto a piece of cardboard using safety pins to hold it in place.

6. Place one section of the fabric circle onto the end of the elastic, lining up the edges. Place the fabric onto the elastic with the sewn side facing down.

7. Sew around 1 inch of the elastic to secure the fabric onto the elastic. Re-pin the elastic after the sewn section, keeping the elastic stretched.

8. Rotate the fabric circle onto the next inch of elastic, and pin up the edges. Sew along the elastic to secure the fabric, as before, then re-pin the elastic after the sewn inch.

9. Repeat this process until the entire stretched elastic has been sewn around the fabric circle.

10. Place the edges of the elastic touching each other, then sew them together.

11. Slip the fabric hair bun wrap over your bun.

Tips & Warnings

• Use lace fabric for a bridal bun wrap, or velvet fabric for a Christmas bun wrap.

• Keep sharp scissors, straight pins, safety pins and sewing needles out of the reach of children.
