How to Color Manga Scans on LiveJournal

Manga is a term that refers to Japanese comic books, which are often drawn in a distinctive black-and-white art style. LiveJournal users scan and post pages from manga comics on their journal or in LiveJournal fan groups, allowing other visitors to view the scanned pages. If you want to color a scanned page someone has posted on LiveJournal, you must download the page as an image file on your computer and edit the image in a graphics program.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the manga scan on the LiveJournal site, right-click the image and choose to save the picture as a file on your computer.

    • 2

Launch a graphic program, such as GIMP, Photoshop or Painter, on your computer.

    • 3

Click the “File” menu and click “Open” to browse your computer for the manga scan. Double-click the manga scan file to load it in the program.

    • 4

Click the “Layers” menu and select “New Layer.” This will create a floating invisible layer over the manga scan image.

    • 5

Select “Multiply” as the blending mode for the layer from the “Layer” window. You can now color on the floating layer while allowing the original line art from the manga scan to show through.

    • 6

Choose a drawing tool, such as the "Paint Brush," from the tool bar.

    • 7

Select the color you want to paint with from the color palette.

    • 8

Click and drag your mouse cursor over the image to color on top of the manga scan image.

    • 9

Click the “Layers” menu once you have finished painting, and select “Merge Layers” or “Drop All” to flatten the layers into one image.

    • 10

Click “File” and choose “Save” to save the colored scan to your computer. You can now return to LiveJournal and post the colored scan for other users to view.
