Making Braided Tassels From Yarn
A braided tassel has a braided head at the top with flowing strands at the bottom. Making a braided tassel is not difficult, and it is possible to create a wide variety of tassel designs using the same basic instructions. The braids will add a level of formality to the tassel that makes it suitable for use in formal rooms or objects, such as fancy bookmarks or curtain ties.

1
Cut the cardboard to the same width as the desired tassel length. If you want a 10-inch long tassel, cut the cardboard into a rectangle 10 inches wide and 20 inches long.
-
2
Wrap the yarn around the width of the cardboard 100 times. Wrap more or fewer times depending on how thick you want the tassel.
-
-
3
Wrap a small piece of yarn around the center of the wrapped yarn. Tie the yarn into a tight knot.
-
4
Cut the yarn opposite end the tied section. Wrap a second piece of yarn around the tied section to create a hanger for the tassel. Tie the yarn in place.
-
5
Tie a piece of yarn around the top of the tassel two inches down from the top. This will make a head for the yarn.
-
6
Pull out several pieces of yarn from the top. Pull three strands out for each braid that you want to make. Make enough braids to cover the head of the tassel. This could be between five and 10 braids, for a total of between 15 and 30 strands.
-
7
Braid three strands together to create small braids. Tie a small piece of yarn at the end of each braid.
-
8
Wrap the yarn pieces around the head of the tassel. Tuck the ends of the tassel under the other braids. Glue the braids in place with hot glue.
-
9
Untangle any yarn strands and trim the bottom of the tassel to an even length.
