How to Frame a Floating Mirror

A floating mirror is one that seems to hang in space. It is mounted at a remove from the wall and lends itself well to both traditional and modern designs. But a floating mirror with no frame may not be what you wish to see in your home. A frame gives the mirror a distinct edge between it and the wall and can also help the mirror look more integrated in your home design. This frame does not require the floating mirror to be removed from its location. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure each side of your floating mirror.

    • 2

Cut four strips of wood molding, using a bandsaw, that match the measurements.

    • 3

Bevel the ends of the strips to a 45 degree angle using a bandsaw. When you are done, the pieces should fit together like a picture frame.

    • 4

Prime the wood molding by wetting a piece of cheesecloth with primer and rubbing down the wood. Allow the primer to sit at least 10 minutes.

    • 5

Paint the wood with paint and a paintbrush. If you would like to protect your paint job, spray the wood with a spray acrylic finish. Allow the paint and the finish to dry thoroughly before proceeding. Depending on the humidity and temperature, this can take from a few hours to a full day.

    • 6

Apply a layer of a strong adhesive to the back of one of the strips of molding. Liquid Nails, E6000 and Gorilla Glue are all good choices for this project.

    • 7

Press the glued side of the strip to the corresponding mirror edge.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the three other sides. Allow the glue to cure completely. Different glues have different cure times, so check the glue’s packaging.
