How to Stop the Hotmail Tag

You can remove or change the Hotmail mailto HTML tag on your Web page by modifying the HTML code for that page. This tag allows visitors to your site to generate email messages and send them to your Hotmail account. Whether you are beginning to receive a lot of spam at the address or you want to use a different address as the recipient for those messages, modifying the Hotmail tag will stop the sequence of events that allows visitors to send messages from your website to your Hotmail account.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open your Web-editing program.

    • 2

Click "File" at the top of the window, click "Open" and then double-click the HTML file containing your Hotmail mailto tag. If the tag exists on multiple pages, then you will need to edit the HTML code on each page.

    • 3

Browse to the location in the HTML code containing the Hotmail tag. You are looking for HTML code similar to the following: "<a href="mailto:xxxxx@hotmail.com">Contact me</a>."

    • 4

Modify the code as needed. For example, if you do not want to have any email generated, delete all of the code. If you still want to generate mail but have it sent to a different address, replace the "xxxxx@hotmail.com" portion of the code with a different email address.

    • 5

Click "File" at the top of the window and then click "Save."

    • 6

Upload your edited HTML page to your Web server using your FTP server or your hosting provider's "Upload" Web interface.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are attempting to combat spam sent to your email address because of an email address posted on your website, consider replacing any mailto tags or plain-text email addresses with an image containing your email address. Programs designed to crawl websites for email addresses are typically unable to read the text in images. You can create such an image by launching Paint, and then using the "Text" tool to type your email address into the image. The image can then be saved as a JPEG or GIF and uploaded to your Web server.
