Instructions

    • 1

Clear everything out of the shed. Sweep the floors and wipe down the walls to start with a clean slate.

    • 2

Inspect the structure of the shed to identify any damage that needs to be repaired. Look for rotten boards, weak flooring and holes in the roof. Repair any damage you find before proceeding with the renovation.

    • 3

Look for signs of leaking in the roof, including water circles on the roof or water damage on the floor. Replace the roof if you see signs of leaking, as the contents of your storage shed are likely to be damaged, if you don't. To repair the roof, replace the wood ceiling and cover it with shingles that match your home's shingles to make it fit in.

    • 4

Replace the door if the existing one is in bad condition. Install a new latch that allows you to lock the storage shed if desired.

    • 5

Paint the inside and outside surfaces of the storage shed to give it a fresh, clean look. Choose a color for the outside that coordinates with your home's siding, especially if the shed is visible from the street or from the home.

    • 6

Assign specific uses for each area of the shed, particularly if you have a large space to divide. If you're using it strictly for storage, decide where you want shelving and what items specifically you will store in the shed.

    • 7

Install shelving in the shed. If shelves already exist, inspect them to determine if they are still functional. Replace weak or damaged shelves. Reinforce shelves that you keep with new shelf brackets so they will hold your items securely.

    • 8

Decorate the outside of the shed if desired to make it resemble the style and decor of your home's exterior. Add shutters, decorative wood trim, stone veneer and similar accents to finish the exterior of the shed.
