A crocheted diamond applique is an excellent activity for people just starting to crochet.

Creating a crocheted appliqué is an excellent crochet project for beginners. They are generally small and can be used in a variety of different purposes. A diamond-shaped appliqué can be attached to clothing or a tote bag. It can even be made into a keychain or jewelry. The uses for small crocheted shapes are nearly endless. A diamond-shaped appliqué will utilize three colors; a central, middle and outer color.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with your central yarn. Create a chain of nine stitches by making a slip knot, sliding it onto the crochet hook, yarning over and then pulling the yarn through the loop on the hook. Repeat this eight more times to complete the chain. Create one slip stitch by yarning over and pulling that yarn through the loop. This will form the ring in the center of the diamond.

    • 2

Create one chain stitch and then 20 single-crochets. A single-crochet is completed by drawing the yarn through, yarning over once and bringing the hook through the two loops. Complete one more slip stitch to finish the round. Weave in the ends two times to give the central ring a little more dimension.

    • 3

Attach your middle yarn color to a single-crochet and then create three chain stitches. Create a half double-crochet in the next stitch by yarning over, skipping the first two chains and inserting the hooking into the third chain. Then hook the yarn and bring it through the chain stitch and onto the working area of the hook (there are now three loops on the hook). Hook the yarn again and bring it through all three loops on the hook.

    • 4

Create two single-crochets in each of the next two available stitches. Create a half double-crochet in the next stitch and make two chain stitches. Finally, add a slip stitch to complete the round.

    • 5

Repeat the sequence of three chain stitches, a half double-crochet, two single-crochets, a half double-crochet, two chain stitches and a slip stitch three more times (four times total). Weave in the ends to break off the second round.

    • 6

Attach your outer yarn color to the upper chain of the two chain stitches. Create one chain stitch, skip one stitch and create a half double-crochet.

    • 7

Create a double-crochet by yarning over and sticking the hook in the fabric just to the left of the starting point. Yarn over again and pull it through. There will now be three loops of yarn on your hook. Yarn over, and pull the yarn through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over again, and pull the yarn through the next two loops.

    • 8

Create a treble crochet by bringing the yarn over the hook twice, skipping the first four chains and then inserting the hook into the fifth chain. Hook the yarn and bring it through the chain stitch and onto the working area of the hook (there are now four loops on the hook). Hook the yarn and bring it through only the first two loops on the hook (there are now three loops on the hook). Hook the yarn again and bring it through the second two loops on the hook (there are now two loops on the hook). Hook the yarn one more time and bring in through the two loops remaining on the hook.

    • 9

Make three chain stitches and a slip stitch to the upper chain of the chain three. Create one chain stitch and a single-crochet in the central ring. Then complete a slip stitch to the upper chain of the chain two.

    • 10

Repeat the sequence of one chain stitch, skip one stitch, half double-crochet, double-crochet, treble crochet, three chain stitches, slip stitch, one chain stitch, single crochet and one slip stitch three more times (four times total). Weave in the ends to break off the final round.
