How to Get a Defaulted Student Loan Cancelled
A defaulted student loan can wreak havoc on your finances, particularly if your loan agency is pursuing you for the funds via aggressive collection tactics. In some instances, the defaulted loan should have a cancelled status, generally because of a serious matter. This might be a physical issue -- such as a severe disability -- or because the school in question became unaccredited or closed while you were attending.

1
Contact your student loan lender. Find out who you need to talk to about your defaulted loan and if that is the same person to assist you with the cancellation of your debt. You may have to explain your situation to more than one person in order to arrive at the proper help.

2
Provide documentation to back up your claim. For example, if a severe disability is limiting your ability to work and pay off your loan, you may be able to get it cancelled if you can provide proof of your disability. If the issue is with your school, you will need to provide official documentation that your school is now unaccredited or that it closed before you could complete your coursework.

Provide documentation of military status if you have a National Defense Student Loan, states the Washoe Legal Services website. If you enter the military full time or become a full-time teacher, then this loan can be cancelled, even if you are in default on it. Be prepared to show written proof of either action to your lender.

Enter the Peace Corps or a public benefit service. If you have a Perkins Loan, then according to the Washoe Legal Services site, you can have it cancelled if you join the Peace Corps, become a teacher, nurse, or law enforcement professional, or become employed with a nonprofit serving children or family as its core mission.
