Just about any picture can be converted to a cross-stitch pattern.

Cross-stitching is like painting with thread, using a lot of little colored Xs. There are a couple different ways to make a cross-stitch pattern. The simplest way is with the use of software. Making charts without software involves printing on graph paper or drawing your own graph.

Instructions

  1. Cross-stitch Chart Software

    • 1

Download software for creating cross-stitch patterns to create a pattern on the computer. There are several programs available for free or for purchase.

    • 2

Upload the image you wish to convert to the website or open it in the program you chose to use, then follow the instructions to create the chart.

    • 3

Print out the your cross-stitch pattern chart.

    Graph Paper Cross-stitch Chart

    • 4

Purchase letter-sized graph paper. The smaller the squares on the paper, the more detailed picture you can create.

    • 5

Upload your photo onto the computer. Place the sheets of graph paper in the printer and print your photo.

    • 6

Color in the squares on the paper corresponding to the colors of the photo with markers to make the pattern easier to see.

    Plain Paper Cross-stitch Chart

    • 7

Print your photo on plain white paper. Use a ruler to mark along each edge of the paper every 1/8 or 1/4 inch, depending on the size chart you want to make.

Connect the marks vertically and horizontally using the ruler as a straight edge to draw the graph.
