Adding Sparkles in GIMP

GIMP is a free to use photo manipulation program available across multiple operating systems. Like other photo manipulation programs, you can modify your photos and add special effects to them. For example, if you want to add a sparkle to your picture to indicate a shiny surface, you can accomplish this in GIMP by modifying one of the default brushes to look like a sparkle.

Instructions

    • 1

Load GIMP and open the image you want to modify.

    • 2

Press "Shift," "Ctrl" and "B" simultaneously to open the Brushes window. Click the "New Brush" icon when the dialogue box appears. Name the new brush whatever you want. Change the settings to the following: diamond shape, 75 radius, 4 spikes, .09 hardness, 1.6 aspect ratio, 106.2 angle.

    • 3

Click the "New Layer" icon on the Layers dialogue box. Click the cursor wherever you want your sparkle to appear.

    • 4

Click and drag the new layer you created onto the "New Layer" icon. This duplicates the layer. Change the mode to "Soft Edges" to enhance the sparkle effect.
