How to Calibrate Your MacBook

Apple MacBook laptops feature a battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen. As your MacBook ages, the battery icon may display inaccurate battery life, causing you to run out of power before the icon shows a need to charge. Calibrating your MacBook battery helps correct this malfunction. Apple.com recommends calibrating the battery before using your computer for the first time, then every two to three months thereafter, especially if you normally leave your computer plugged in.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in the power cable and connect it to your MacBook. Allow the computer to charge until the indicator light on the power cord goes from red to green.

    • 2

Keep the cord plugged in for an additional two hours. It is all right to use your computer during this time.

    • 3

Unplug the power cable and use your computer until you receive a warning message that the computer is running on reserve battery power.

    • 4

Save your work and allow the computer to go to sleep. Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours.

    • 5

Plug in the computer and allow the battery to fully charge.
