Making a mistake in front of peers can cause embarrassment.

Some children can become embarrassed easily, even by situations in which most children are comfortable or unaffected. Both parents and teachers can use these situations to help a child learn how to deal with feelings of embarrassment in the future. If your child feels embarrassed, let him know that it is okay to feel embarrassed and help him to feel better about the situation.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell your child a story about a similar situation you experienced when you were a child -- or even as an adult. Let him know how you felt and what you did to make yourself feel better. Knowing that you have gone through embarrassments of your own can help your child feel better about his feelings.

    • 2

Talk to your child about what has made him feel embarrassed. Until you know what the problem is, you won't be able to help him overcome it. Encourage him to talk openly with you so you can help him feel better.

    • 3

Show him a video of the performance or other source of embarrassment if possible. Seeing the experience from another perspective can help him realize that things aren't as bad as he originally imagined.

    • 4

Help your child forget the embarrassment. Make jokes, take him out for ice cream or go to the beach. Show him that he can be happy again and forget about what happened.

    • 5

Create a coping plan with your child ahead of time when you know he will be in a position to become embarrassed. For instance, if he is taking part in a school talent show, let him know what he can expect when he gets on stage. Explain what he should do if he forgets the words or the steps. When he knows what to do, he will not embarrass as easily.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice how to handle embarrassment at home so he is ready if he becomes embarrassed in a public setting.
