How to Make an Easy Red Riding Hood Costume

How to Make an Easy Red Riding Hood Costume thumbnail
A red cape is the only essential element in a little red riding hood costume.

Create a red riding hood costume for your child with very little effort on your part, and send her off to win the best-costume award at school. The little red riding hood character first appeared in a short story written by Charles Perrault in 1697. The story is one of only few famous fairy tales that did not exist as oral tradition before it was penned. You are likely to have almost everything you need to put this costume together lying around the house, and the entire outfit should take you less than a half-hour to assemble.

Things You'll Need

  • Red blanket (or 2 yards red felt)
  • 1/2-inch fabric fastener coins
  • Stapler (or needle and thread)
  • Wicker basket
  • 2 baguettes
  • Sealed Halloween candy

Instructions

    • 1

Drape a red blanket or large piece of red felt over your child so the fabric covers her head but not her face. Even out the blanket, so it is the same length on both sides of your child's body.

    • 2

Gather a section of the fabric directly under your child's chin, letting the rest of the material hang freely. Peel the hook side of a fabric fastener coin, such as those made of Velcro, and stick it on one side of the gathered fabric. Peel the loop side of a fabric fastener coin and stick it on the other side of the gathered fabric.

    • 3

Staple each side of the fabric fastener coin once to reinforce it, or put a few stitches into each side of the coin. Bring both sides of the coin together, so the gathered fabric forms a hood around your child's head.

    • 4

Give your child a large basket to carry. Place the baguettes so they can be seen emerging from one side of the basket. Fill the rest of the basket with Halloween candies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let your child hand out the Halloween candies to her peers at school, or to her friends and neighbors.

  • Make sure the red blanket or felt does not drag on the floor, or your child is likely to step on it and rip her cape.
