How to Troubleshoot a J1939 Data Bus
A J1939 data bus is a high-speed converter box for OmniTRACS systems to be used with vehicles. These boxes are used to convert data from a satellite system to a readable output inside the vehicle. J1939 converter boxes are used for onboard GPS signals, safety communication devices and in-vehicle phones or Internet connections. Anyone installing these systems onto their vehicles must first connect the J1939 converter box before the systems will work properly.

1
Check for missing data on the system screen. This data may appear in different forms depending on if the system is a GPS, phone connection or emergency call system. If data is missing, check if all data or just some data is missing.
-
2
Contact Diagnostic System Associates, the manufacturer of the J1939 converter box, if critical data is missing. Critical data includes the software operating the system or the initial set-up screen. Critical data is typically listed as numbers one through 10. DSA will reset the data connection from a remote location.

3
Adjust the power connection to the J1939 converter box if all data input is missing. Make sure the power and ground cords are connected. Tighten the joint with a wrench.
-
4
Check the volt and ohm readings. If these are not reading any electrical currents, replace the wires with new wires, then check again.
-
5
Check all connections leading to and from the J1939 converter box. If these are loose, tighten the connections with a wrench. Replace accessory cables if necessary. If the box is still not working, replace the box with another unit.
