Cut long strips of fabric that are about 5 inches wide and wrap them around the post, securing them to the post with glue. Use a fabric that does not fray or finish the edges of the fabric by hemming them. This method is inexpensive and can be accomplished easily. It also allows you to match your pole cover to the decor of your basement.

Paint your poles with a paintbrush using a paint suited for metal. You can paint the pole a flat, single color, or you can paint designs on it. For example, you could paint a to-scale measuring tape on the post and use it to mark your child’s growth over the years.

Box in your pole by creating a tall box out of 1-by-5-inch board. Cut four lengths of board that match the height of your pole and nail them together, creating three sides of a box. Then place the three-sided box around the pole and nail the fourth side into place. At this point, the wood can be painted or stained.

Cover the post with a commercial pole cover. These pole covers come in both standard and custom sizes, and they range from faux Greek columns to textured tree bark. These professional solutions may be glued in place or secured using other fasteners, depending on the type.
