Create beautiful artwork by adding highlights.

Prismacolors, colored pencils that are soft and blend easily, allow you to create highly detailed, professional drawings. Prismacolors let you mix colors together and add highlights to make a drawing stand out. Highlights add a three-dimensional quality to an image and are an ideal way to make a person or animal seem more lifelike. To produce realistic highlights in a drawing, use white or another light color, like pale yellow, pink or green.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the object you are drawing. Find spots that look lighter than others. These are the areas you want to highlight.

    • 2

Sketch your drawing very lightly on paper with a regular pencil. Draw the outline of the areas you want to highlight or make a different color.

    • 3

Color in the darkest part of the drawing first. If you already know where you want to make the highlights, color around them, leaving the area blank.

    • 4

Select a different Prismacolor shade that matches the color you want to highlight. For example, if you want to highlight a dark blue area, use a light blue Prismacolor. Color in the spots you want to highlight and blend the edges of the lighter color into the edges of the darker color. This makes the highlight look realistic.

Draw attention to certain areas with white highlights. White makes an object look shiny and shows the direction of a light source. Use it to add detail to a person's or animal's eye.

Tips & Warnings

  • Press the Prismacolor pencil down hard for stronger, more vibrant highlights. Press down gently for soft, subtle highlights.

  • Use white Prismacolors to add dramatic highlights to marker drawings.
