How to Ask for a Memorial Donation for a Funeral
An unexpected death in the family and the costs of the funeral can cause a strain on a family’s finances. Depending upon a family’s financial situation, there may be no life insurance policy or money available to pay for the funeral costs. There's no harm in asking for help to pay for the funeral; however, it can be done in a way that won't make the family feel the shame of financial hardship.

1
Speak with the funeral director about different options available for the funeral and requesting donations instead of floral arrangements. He may also be able to suggest a few local charities that may be able to help out with the costs of the funeral.
-
2
Let all of the friends and family know that donations are being accepted instead of flowers to help pay for the costs of the funeral. Through word of mouth, let everyone know that the family needs help to pay for the funeral, so they can understand why donations are being accepted.
-
-
3
Include information about donations being preferred over flowers in the newspaper’s obituary.
-
4
Speak with your minister about your current financial situation. He can make an announcement asking for help in an upcoming service or the church may be able to help in some other way.
-
5
Request that checks be made out to the funeral home. This will show friends and family that the funds are truly intended for the funeral and not for personal use by the family.
