How to Get the Strongest Signal From Your Router
Your wireless router connects the computers in your home to the Internet. Most wireless routers have a wide signal range that produces a reliable connection for each computer regardless of its position in a room or building. Sometimes, though, the router's signal is not as strong as it should be, resulting in a weak connection. A weak signal does not always mean that you need to replace your router. You can often repair the connection yourself for free.

1
Reposition the wireless router. If the router is blocked by a wall or placed in a corner, its signal may have difficulty reaching all the computers in your home. Put the router in an open area that is not obstructed by walls or metal objects.

2
Download the latest drivers for your router. Drivers and firmware are sometimes released to fix problems and enhance router performance. To find downloads, visit the website of your router's manufacturer.

3
Select a different channel for wireless router operation. If other household items, like baby monitors or cordless telephones, operate on the same channel as the router, this can cause interference. Certain free utilities let you change the channel easily, such as Tomato, NetStumbler and InSSIDer. Try different channels until you find the one that works best.

4
Install a new wireless adapter to get a better signal. Many older computers rely on card-based adapters, so if that's the case for you, switch to a USB adapter with an external antenna. If your router has a removable antenna, replacing it may also improve the signal.

5
Set up a wireless repeater. A wireless repeater extends the router's signal, allowing it to reach computers that are farther away.
