Instructions

    • 1

Add oil to the pan to keep the French toast from sticking. Cooking spray is oil that comes in an aerosol can, making it easier to apply the oil to the pan. Most nonstick oil is canola oil that has been thinned out by water. The emulsifying agent lecithin keeps the water and oil suspended, because they normally do not mix. The oil prevents food from sticking to pans.

    • 2

Dip the French toast into the oil as an alternative to putting oil in the pan.

    • 3

Add a little butter to the pan if you do not have oil. Cook the butter until it melts, so the French toast slides across the pan. Also, the butter will add flavor to the French toast.

    • 4

Use a metal spatula to remove the French toast from the pan. Use a rubber spatula when you are using a nonstick pan.

    • 5

Fill the pan with water immediately, after using it. This will prevent any residue from hardening on the pan, which makes it easier to clean up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a nonstick pan to avoid sticking issues altogether. Nonstick pans have a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene, which is a plastic polymer that does not like to bond to other molecules, except for more polytetrafluoroethylene molecules. It works well, even at high temperatures.

  • Avoid using an old pan. When pans are scrubbed, they get scratches all over, which make it easier for food to stick to it.

  • Two slices of French toast contain between 300 and 500 calories. As with all breads, French toast has many carbohydrates, which aren’t helpful for those on a low-carb diet. The eggs and milk in the French toast are high in saturated fat. Also, French toast can be high in cholesterol.
