How to Hook Up a Dual Monitor to an HP Laptop 6510B

The HP 6510b is a laptop computer that comes equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, a 14.1-inch widescreen display and up to 4GB of SDRAM installed. Among the device's other features is the ability to connect to an external monitor. This allows users to mirror presentations on a separate, larger screen, if desired. The connected monitor can also function as an extension to the laptop's desktop, allowing users to drag windows from one display to another.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the laptop's monitor port. The HP 6510b features a single external monitor port located on the rear panel of the device, near the right edge. This port is designed for use with a VGA monitor; however, some third-party manufacturers offer VGA adapters to assist with HDMI or DVI connections.

Plug the external display into a nearby grounded electrical outlet. Connect the display's interface cable into the laptop's monitor port; if the laptop is currently powered on, shut it down before connecting the cable. Turn on the monitor and power up the laptop. Log into the operating system.

    • 3

Find the "fn" and "f4" keys, located in the top row of keys on the keyboard. Press both keys simultaneously to toggle through the display options. You can configure the laptop to transmit a video signal to both displays simultaneously, or only one display at a time.

    • 4

Open the "Start" menu and select the "Control Panel" option. Open the "Appearance and Presentation" control panel and select the option labeled "Adjust screen resolution."

    • 5

Find the drop-down menu labeled "Multiple Displays" and review the available options. "Duplicate these displays" will configure the laptop to display identical output on both displays. "Extend these displays" will allow you to use the external monitor as an extension of the laptop's desktop. The remaining options allow you to configure the laptop to use only one of the connected monitors as a desktop.

    • 6

Examine the sample display arrangement shown at the top of the control panel window. If you have configured the laptop to use the external monitor as an extension of its desktop, you can drag the sample displays around to match the desired configuration. Click on the "OK" button to confirm your changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • The laptop features "standby" and "hibernation" features that will disable the displays after a certain period of inactivity; you can adjust or disable this feature by accessing "Power Options" in the "Performance and Maintenance" control panel.
