How to Set Humidity Levels on Basement Dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air and help keep your basement dry. Dehumidifiers also reduce the chances of future mold growth and help prevent structural damage to the area caused by excess moisture. Setting the humidity levels depends on the brand, model and type of dehumidifier you own. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the dehumidistat on the dehumidifier. The dehumidistat is generally located on the front of the machine but it depends on the make and model. Refer to the owner’s manual for more information specific.

    • 2

Turn the dial toward the right to turn the dehumidifier on. The average humidity level for most homes is 30 percent.

    • 3

Turn the dial to the right -- toward the higher numbers -- if the basement humidity level is too low. This will keep the dehumidifier from removing too much moisture from the air.

    • 4

Turn the dial to the left -- to the lower numbers -- if the basement has too much humidity or the basement is too damp.

Tips & Warnings

  • The lower the humidity level, the quicker the water container will fill up. This means you'll need to empty it more often.

  • The dehumidifier will turn on and off as it reaches the desired humidity level.

  • If your dehumidifier does not have a built-in humidity meter built into it, purchase a humidity meter and mount it near the dehumidifier. This will tell you the exact levels in the basement.
