How to Set the Upload Speed Limit on YouTube

YouTube doesn’t contain an upload-speed limiting feature and can saturate your Internet connection’s upload bandwidth when you're uploading videos. Saturation can slow all other download and upload activity to a crawl, making Web browsing and other activities frustrating and time-consuming. You can prevent this from happening with a third-party traffic-shaping application that can limit a program’s upload bandwidth. The application limits the upload bandwidth allotted to the YouTube connection or to a Web browser itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install NetLimiter from netlimiter.com. Open NetLimiter after installing it, locate your Web browser in the list, click the Limit check box in the Outgoing column to the right of your Web browser and enter an upload speed limit in kilobytes. You can also click the plus-sign button to the left of your Web browser’s name while uploading to YouTube, locate the specific connection using a large amount of upload bandwidth and limit the connection itself.

Use NetBalancer, available from seriousbit.com/netbalancer. Open NetBalancer after installation, right-click your Web browser in the list and select Limit under Upload in the menu to set a precise limit. You can also select Low. NetBalancer automatically limits the upload bandwidth available to low-priority applications.

Install cFosSpeed from cfos.de. Open cFosSpeed after installation, click Options and select Settings. Click the Programs tab and locate your Web browser in the list of programs. If you don’t see it, click “Add” and locate your Web browser to the list of applications known to cFosSpeed. Use the Set Priority slider to set the Web browser’s priority to Low and click “Save Priorities.”

Tips & Warnings

  • Disable the upload speed limit or set your Web browser back to normal priority after it finishes uploading to YouTube.

  • You can use a different Web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, while uploading to YouTube. The traffic-shaping application limits the upload bandwidth available to one Web browser, leaving the leftover bandwidth available to other Web browsers and applications on your system.
