How to Invert Colors From Regular to Negative on MS Paint thumbnail
You can achieve striking visual effects when you invert colors in Microsoft Paint.

Inverting colors in a graphic creates a striking photographic negative effect by inverting the RGB values of the color, which adds visual interest to any picture or photo. Before the release of Paint 6.1 with Windows 7, you could invert the colors of your picture from a menu option in the program. This option was removed from the menu with Paint 6.1, but you can still invert colors in Paint if you invert the colors in a selection.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Windows Paint. Click the “Paint” button and then “Open” and load a picture. You can also drag a picture from a folder or your desktop into the main Paint window to open it.

    • 2

Press and hold the “Ctrl” key and press “A” to select the entire picture. A dotted line surrounds the image.

    • 3

Right-click the picture. Click “Invert Color” from the context menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also invert just a portion of a picture. Click the “Home” tab, then click “Select” and choose “Rectangular Selection” or “Free-Form Selection.” Draw the selection box or shape on your graphic to select an area, then right-click and choose “Invert Color.”
