How to Convert FBK Files

By Tammy Clevenger

Two applications use the FBK file type. These are Microsoft Dynamics and Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker. FBK files use a .fbk file name extension. FBK files are backup files. To convert an FBK backup file, restore the file using the application that created it. In the case of Microsoft Dynamics, the FBK file type is a backup file of the primary database. The FBK file may be used to restore the primary database using Microsoft Dynamics Navision, newly named NAV. For Family Tree Maker, the file is easily restored using the application interface.

Restore Backup Database in Microsoft Dynamics Navision (NAV)

Open the Navision (NAV) application on the computer where the database will be restored.

Click the "File" option on the top navigation bar in NAV, and then click "Database."

Click "New" to create a new, blank database to hold the FBK data.

Type "(local)" (without quotes) for the "Server Name" and click "OK."

Type a name for the new database in the "Name" field.

Click the "Recovery Model" tab and then click "Simple."

Click the "Security Model" tab and then click "Standard."

Click "OK."

Click the "Tools" option on the top navigation bar in NAV.

Click "Restore." The FBK database is restored to the newly created database.

Restore Backup Family Tree Maker File

Open the Ancestry.com Family Tree Maker application.

Click the "File" option from the top navigation bar.

Click the "Restore from Backup" option. A file navigation window opens.

Navigate to and click on the FBK file and click "Open." The file loads into the window.

Click "OK" to restore the FBK backup file.
