How to Do a Proportional Return in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop CS5 includes an assortment of utilities for editing and modifying your images, as well as the ability to proportionally return an image to its' original size. This feature is helpful in situations where you need to reduce the file size of a large image to save it for the Web, but still want to keep the image saved with its' original dimensions. A proportional return on your Photoshop image is made possible through the use of the "History" window found within Photoshop.

Instructions

    • 1

      Launch Photoshop.

    • 2

Click "File," click "Open," and then double-click the image file for which you would like to perform a proportional return.

    • 3

Click "Image" at the top of the window, and then click "Image Size."

    • 4

Check the box to the left of "Constrain Proportions," and then edit the "Width" and "Height" values at the top of the window so that they represent the desired new image size.

    • 5

Click "OK" to apply the change.

    • 6

Click "File" at the top of the window, and then click "Save As" or "Save For Web & Devices."

    • 7

Type a name for the resized image into the "File Name" field, and then click the "Save" button.

    • 8

Click "Window" at the top of the window, and then click "History."

    • 9

Right-click the "Image Size" option in the "History" window, and then click "Delete."

    • 10

Click "Yes" to confirm the change and apply your proportional return to the original image size.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will only be able to perform a proportional return in Photoshop while the image is still open in the same Photoshop session as when the proportions were changed. Once you close or exit Photoshop all of your image's history will be erased.
