How to Do Avatar Movie Faces in Photoshop thumbnail
Blue skin, pointed ears, large eyes and a flat nose are hallmarks of Avatar faces.

If you're a fan of James Cameron's film, "Avatar," you have probably wondered what you might look like in an avatar of your own. Using a few layers in Adobe Photoshop, transform yourself or your friends into a lifelike Na'vi. The four main aspects of the transformation include blue skin, large eyes, long ears and a square nose. For best results it's a good idea to look at some pictures from the film while you customize the image to get your own Avatar look.

Instructions

  1. Skin

    • 1

Launch Photoshop and click “Open” under the File menu. Navigate to a photo you would like to use for the Avatar design and click “Open.”

    • 2

Press “F7” to reveal the Layer Panel. Drag the “Background” layer onto the “New Layer” button at the bottom of the panel to duplicate the photo in a new layer.

    • 3

Click the “Foreground Color” icon in the Toolbar to open the color picker and select a blue for the skin tone, such as “#5D7A99.”

    • 4

Click the “Brush Tool” in the Toolbox. Set the diameter in the “Brush” menu of the Option Bar located at the top of the screen. Select “Color” in the Mode menu and type “50” in the Opacity field.

    • 5

Drag the brush over the skin in the photo, avoiding the eyes and lips.

    • 6

Click the “Foreground Color” icon in the Toolbar again and select a purple for the lips, such as “#472A50.” Adjust the brush size as needed in the Options Bar and paint the lips with the brush.

    Eyes

    • 7

Select the “Lasso Tool” from the Toolbox. Drag it around one eye and eyebrow.

    • 8

Press “Ctrl-C” to copy the select, then “Ctrl-V” to paste it in a new layer. Click the “Edit” menu, then select “Free Transform.” Drag the corners of the eye and eyebrow outward to lengthen them, then press “Enter.”

    • 9

Select the “Eraser Tool” from the Toolbox and erase the edges of the enlarged eye and eybrow as needed, so they fit on the face correctly.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 1 to 3 to transform the other eye.

    Ears

    • 11

Add the ears to your face by finding your favorite screenshot from the "Avatar" film. Open the image in Photoshop and drag the Lasso Tool around an ear, then press “Ctrl-C” to copy it. Alternatively, use a picture of a bat’s ear and color it blue as you did with the face. Paste the image onto your face.

    • 12

Click the “Edit” menu; select “Transform.” Click “Free Transform" to adjust the size of the ear for your face.

    • 13

Drag the Lasso Tool over the ear, then copy and paste it for the second ear. Click the “Edit” menu and select “Transform.” Click “Flip Horizontal.” Move the ear into place with the “Move” tool.

    Nose

    • 14

Select “Merge Visible” from the Layer menu to turn the image layers into a single layer.

    • 15

Select the “Rectangular Marquee Tool” from the Toolbox. Drag the tool across the nose. Press “Ctrl-C” to copy the nose, then “Ctrl-V” to paste it in a new layer.

    • 16

Select “Liquify” from the Filter menu. Adjust the brush size as needed for your photo so the brush is slightly larger than the width of the nose. Drag the nose outward from the center to the left and right with the brush, so that the nose is as wide as the bottom where the nostrils are, until you have a square nose. Click “OK.”

    • 17

Select “Merge Visible” from the Layer menu again. Select “Save As” to save the image as a new image file.
