How to Thread-Baste An Applique

The basting stitch is a very basic sewing stitch often used instead of straight pins to hold fabric in place during the final sewing. Basting is an appropriate stitch for attaching appliques because a tighter stitch may cause the applique to pucker. If you use a basting stitch around the outside edge of the applique, the stitches become invisible while the applique is held firmly in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread an upholstery needle with thread that matches the main color of the applique’s outer border. Pull the thread through the eye of the needle until both ends are level and the thread is doubled. Knot the thread.

    • 2

Position the applique where you want to attach it. Hold it there while you bring the needle up from the underside of the applique. Ensure the knot is caught and disguised between the applique and the attaching fabric.

    • 3

Make a small stitch buy pushing the needle down through the applique and the attaching fabric, close to the initial stitch. Keep your stitches to the outer edge of the applique.

    • 4

Push the needle up again to the top of the applique, about 1/2 half inch from the previous entry point. Push the needle down through both layers again, about 1/2 half inch from the previous entry point. Continue these long stitches until you reach your starting point.

    • 5

Knot the thread on the underside of the applique to disguise the knot. Snip the thread.
