Canned cat food has proper amounts of moisture for healthy urinary tracts.

Finding out what food your cat likes can be stressful, especially when it decides -- after a few feedings of the 10-pound bag you just purchased -- the food is no longer appealing. Typically, if your cat eats what you feed it, the cat likes what is being offered. However, your cat can also go off its food when bored, and choose not to eat what you know it to like. To prevent inducing unhealthy eating habits, feed your cat a quality diet varied with the meat flavors it prefers.

Instructions

    • 1

Offer foods that contain whole meat ingredients and essential nutrients necessary for your cat to be healthy and prevent disease. Most cats prefer foods that contain real meat.

    • 2

Feed foods appropriate to your cat’s age. For example, adult cats may not like kitten food because it contains ingredients their bodies are not craving.

    • 3

Read the labels on the foods you feed .This gives you insight into what flavors of meat your cat likes and does not like by what it is eating and not eating.

    • 4

Select similar food flavors between brands when changing brands. For example, when changing from a lower-quality to higher-quality food, offer the meat flavor (salmon, chicken or turkey) your cat has eaten before.

    • 5

Offer small tastes of new foods gradually to prevent overeating. If your cat overindulges and ends up with a bellyache, it may be less likely to eat that food again.

    • 6

Buy foods in small quantities. Rotate flavors to keep your cat from getting bored with its meals, and going off its food for a few days.

    • 7

Disperse myths and know the benefits of canned cat food. Unlike dry cat food, canned cat food is better for your cat’s health, which is all the reason to be less resistant to using it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make new foods palatable with gravies and broths.

  • Keep foods stored in airtight containers for freshness. Foods that lose their flavor may not interest your cat the second day, and make it appear the cat is no longer interested in that food.

  • Dry cat food has little or no moisture making it less palatable and less healthy than canned food.

  • Low quality foods are nutritionally deficient and increase the chance of disease and illness in your cat.

  • Do not change foods quickly to prevent intestinal upset.

  • Feed cats at least two meals a day for optimal nutritional benefit.
