Instructions

    • 1

Create a new layer on your image. On the standard layout, with your image of choice already loaded into the software, the button for creating a new layer will be in the lower right hand cluster of buttons. Once the layer is created, it should appear under the Layers tab on the center-right of the screen. Select this layer to make it the active one.

    • 2

Rename your new layer so you can recognize it at a glance. This will be the layer that is responsible for controlling your glossy lighting effect.

    • 3

Activate the Elliptical Marquee Tool on your toolbar. Its icon resembles a dotted circle. Dragging your mouse across your image with this tool turned on will select the area that the sheen effect of the gloss overlay will be applied to. Place this highlight where you want the effect to appear.

    • 4

Color in the elliptical area you've selected with pure white paint using the Bucket tool. This will cause your new layer to look like an opaque, white blob over your original image. Once this has been placed, deselect it to remove the dotted outline.

    • 5

Select your layer under the Layers tab, and drop down the selection box for lighting effects just above it. Find the option for "soft lighting," and apply it to your layer. This will add a translucency and will cause your overlay to resemble the white glare effect that high-gloss paper or a plate of glass would cause.

Tips & Warnings

  • Small adjustments to the gloss effect can be made at your discretion in the Blending Options menu when you right click on your image layer.

  • Always make a backup of any image you are making changes to in Photoshop, so that there is never any danger of causing damage to your original.
