How to Convert a Bitmap to a Vector in Flash CS5

A vector's components are defined by mathematical values while a bitmap's components are defined by pixels or dots. A vector is scalable, but a bitmap is not. TIFF and EPS are examples of vector files and JPEG and GIF are examples of bitmap files. Flash CS5 uses the Trace Bitmap option to convert bitmaps into vectors, which allows you to manipulate the image within Flash and reduce the file size.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "File," "Import" and "Import to Stage" in the Flash menu. The Import dialog opens. Find and double-click the bitmap you want to modify.

    • 2

Click on the bitmap to select it on your page.

    • 3

Select "Modify," "Bitmap" and "Trace Bitmap" from the menu. This opens the Trace Bitmap dialog box.

    • 4

Adjust the settings for "Color threshold," "Minimum area," "Curve fit" and "Color threshold" to add or remove details in the image. Setting "Color threshold" to "10," "Minimum area" to "1," "Curve fit" to "Pixels" and "Color threshold" to "Many Corners" creates a vector that looks similar to the bitmap.

    • 5

Click "OK" to convert the bitmap into a vector.
