How to Recruit Discreetly at a Job Fair

How to Recruit Discreetly at a Job Fair thumbnail
Job fairs draw numerous qualified applicants.

Job fair recruiters have the difficult task of attracting qualified applicants in a short period of time, while numerous other businesses are simultaneously vying for candidates' attention. While setting up tables and passing out brochures is an effective means of gaining exposure for your company, a few proactive techniques can help you connect with promising recruits discreetly instead of overtly. A job fair draws candidates who are already interested in your company's general field of business, so it is your task to seek out the cream of the crop to fill your positions.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact each participating college prior to the event. Work with the academic counseling department to discover which specific majors or certificate programs are most suited for your company's available positions.

    • 2

Put some business cards in your pocket at the job fair. Step away from the recruiting table. Mingle with the crowd and introduce yourself to someone. Ask the individual his name, and memorize it.

    • 3

Ask the individual which college he attended and what his major was. If his major is one that suits your position, give him your business card.

    • 4

Tell him about the various positions your company has available. Ask the individual about his background, skills and career goals. If you like what he has to say, inform him that you are having a less formal lunch gathering for a handful of promising applicants. Ask if he would like to attend.

    • 5

Walk the individual over to your career booth. Introduce him to your colleagues and have him fill out an application. Let him use one of your company pens, and allow him to keep it.

    • 6

Inform the individual that you will check his references and contact him with further details about your luncheon if all goes well. Shake the individual's hand and thank him for his time.

    • 7

Repeat this process throughout the entire event.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hold your applicant luncheon soon after the job fair, to ensure applicants do not get recruited away by other companies.

  • Never promise a position at a job fair or you may hire an individual that is misrepresenting his qualifications or experience. Take time to check references and do several interviews or you could wind up with the wrong person for the job.
