How to Dress in a Nautical Way
The popularity of the nautical look can ebb and flow with the tides of fashion, but it never truly goes out of style. Great Britain's Queen Victoria is often credited with first making the nautical style popular when, in 1846, she dressed her son, Albert, in a sailor suit. The look caught the eye of the general public and this crisp-appearing -- and sometimes whimsical style -- has been a fashion mainstay ever since. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Dress in crisp whites and navy blues. Articles of clothing with horizontal blue and white stripes -- also known as Breton stripes -- are particularly nautical in appearance, as they echo the look of a mariniere, the sailor shirt traditionally worn by low-ranking French sailors.
-
2
Wear clothing sewn from material that incorporates anchors, sailboats or anchor chains into its pattern. Accents of red and gold in the pattern also add a maritime flair.
-
-
3
Wear a top or jacket that bears a sailor collar. Traditionally, the sailor collar is knotted in a tie on the front and is a broad square shape in the back.
-
4
Choose boating or sailing shoes or spectator pumps for your footwear. Both complement the nautical style well.
-
5
Look for articles of clothing that sport brass accents, military-type stars, gold trim or faux epaulettes.
-
6
Top off your look with a sailor hat or other nautically inspired cap.
