How to Build a Picket Sign With Cardboard
Though cardboard picket signs may not appear elaborate at first glance, there are some necessary steps involved in their construction. A picket sign must be able to withstand wind, rain and other adverse weather conditions, so extra attention during its creation will add to overall durability. Cardboard is a key element in a well-constructed sign. With this material, you can construct a sturdy backing that will add to your sign's eye appeal and ensure that your message is seen.

1
Decide what you would like your picket sign to say. Try to keep it simple; aim for a four-word message. Write the words on the poster board in pencil, then trace over them with a marker once you're happy with the position.

2
Place your poster board over one of the cardboard boxes. Trim the cardboard with the utility knife to get the sizes matched up.

3
Put the cardboard and the poster board on the wooden board. Center the wood in the middle of the cardboard and extend it at least two-thirds of the way across the sign. Be sure the wood covers any creases or folds in the cardboard.

4
Staple through the poster board and cardboard to the wood. Tape the poster board and cardboard together around the edges. Repeat the process on the other side with your remaining poster board and cardboard to complete the sign.

Tips & Warnings
As an added safety precaution, you can replace the wooden board with a sturdy cardboard tube. You can purchase a tube from any store that sells mailing supplies.
Cut a few horizontal slits in the sides of your sign to cut down on wind resistance.
