How to Hook a Second Cable Modem to Charter Internet

Add a second Charter cable modem to double your Internet bandwidth.

Hooking up a second cable modem to the Charter cable Internet service requires two separate accounts. Each account allows for a single cable modem, which is identified by the modem's Media Access Control, or MAC, address. To use the bandwidth of both cable modems concurrently, you must have a router that supports load-balancing two Wide Area Network, or WAN, connections. When a computer or device on your network tries to access the Internet, the speed is automatically balanced between both cable modems.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish a second account with Charter.

    • 2

Connect a coaxial cable splitter to the cable line and connect two coaxial cables between each cable modem and the splitter.

    • 3

Connect each cable modem's Ethernet port to one of the "WAN" ports on the dual-WAN router.

    • 4

Power on both cable modems and wait 60 seconds for them to synchronize the signal.

    • 5

Power on the dual-WAN router and wait 30 seconds for it to initialize. Both cable modems are automatically detected and load-balanced.

    • 6

Connect the rest of the network to the dual-WAN router by connecting Ethernet cables to the router's LAN ports. Internet requests from the network are automatically load-balanced across both cable Internet connections.
