A New Jersey aerobics instructor isn't required to be certified, but it helps.

If you enjoy keeping physically fit through aerobics and believe you would make a good instructor, you may want to become an aerobics instructor. Although some aerobics instructors work full-time, many choose to teach just one or two classes a week for extra money and a chance to remain physically fit at the same time. If you plan to become an aerobics instructor in New Jersey, you aren't required by law to obtain a specific certification. However, most gyms will want you to have some type of fitness instructor certification before you will be considered for a position as an instructor.

Instructions

    • 1

Participate in as many aerobics classes as possible before deciding that teaching a class is something you want to pursue. Not only do you need to be in excellent physical condition to be an instructor but the more experience you have, the more likely it will be that you will be considered for the job.

    • 2

Enroll in a group fitness certification course. Certification in group fitness is offered by schools and organizations in New Jersey such as American Fitness Professionals and Associates and the National Personal Training Institute.

    • 3

Complete all of the required coursework and pass the final examination. Coursework can often be completed online or through correspondence, eliminating the need to attend classes. Although programs differ, common topics include injury avoidance, evaluations methods and class preparation lessons. Upon completion, you will be awarded a certificate stating that you are a certified group fitness instructor.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with gyms or other organizations that hire aerobics instructors in your area before you go to the time and expense of completing a certification program, to determine whether they require instructors to be certified. If they do, ask if they recommend certification from a specific organization.

  • Although many gyms require certification, they will typically require you to try out, too. Have a routine ready when you apply.
