How to Look Like an Old School Rapper

A heavy gold chain is one of the few enduring accessories of modern rappers.

In the early 1980s, rappers cultivated an enduring iconic image that the media and public would associate with their music several years later. M.C. Hammer was among the first to embrace what would later be called the, "old school" rapper look. Today, in 2011, the dress and appearance of modern rappers has more variety. Some critics attribute the prevalence of certain clothing adjustments, like wearing one's pants below the rear, to the rapper style. And even though the crotch of classic "old school" rapper pants fell lower than previous costumes, the original pants completely covered the rear, making them socially appropriate, if somewhat outlandish.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear faux or genuine silk harem pants. Harem pants, sometimes called parachute pants or balloon pants, fit snugly around the waist and billowed outward over the crotch and upper legs before tapering heavily a few inches just above the ankle. Pull the harem pants two inches below your navel, which will lower the crotch of the pants even further.

    • 2

Wear a tapered metallic blazer with shoulder pads. Insert extra shoulder pads if necessary. Find a blazer that fits generously through the arms and upper torso and have it tailored so it tapers heavily starting at the upper abdomen. Crop off the bottom so the blazer ends three inches above the navel. Expose your chest by leaving the buttons entirely or mostly undone.

    • 3

Wear black, well-shined dress shoes, similar to those you would see at a wedding. The bottoms of your harem pants must cover the tops of your shoes, concealing your socks and ankles.

    • 4

Place a chunky gold chain or medallion around your neck. The chain must fall between your nipples and navel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the top two buttons on the blazer and secure the last button to streamline the entire look and keep you warm.
