How to Crochet Baby Mary Jane Shoes
Dress a baby in haute couture with crocheted Mary Jane shoes. According to "The Independent," they are named after the sister of the cartoon figure, Buster Brown, and are flat-soled, low-cut slippers with a strap across each foot. These slippers may be crocheted using baby-fine worsted yarn or with thread. Crochet thread makes a delicate shoe that may be modified with various decorative crochet or embroidery stitches by an experienced needle-worker. Other decorations such as ribbon rosebuds may be sewn onto the top of the slipper.

Slipper Sole
-
1
Create an oval shoe sole. Cast on 14 chain stitches, and make seven double crochet stitches in the fourth stitch from the hook. Make a double crochet in each of the next 12 chain stitches. In the last stitch, make eight double crochet stitches. Join the last double crochet stitch to the third chain stitch with a slip stitch. This is the center of the sole with 40 double crochet stitches.
-
2
Continue making double crochet stitches around the sole center. Keep the oval shape by making extra stitches in the ends as in the first round. The second round has 56 stitches.
-
-
3
Crochet a third and fourth round by following the established pattern. The third round has 68 stitches. The fourth round has 84 stitches.
-
4
Make the left shoe sole in the same manner, except after making the first round, turn the sole center to work in the opposite direction.
Slipper Top
-
5
Use a double crochet decrease stitch to begin the top. To make a double crochet decrease stitch, work a double crochet in stitch, but do not complete it. When two loops are left on the hook, work a double crochet in the next stitch until three loops are left on the hook. Draw a thread through all three loops.
-
6
Work the first round in back loops only. Begin the pattern -- double crochet decrease, two double crochet -- and repeat for a total of seven repetitions. Next, work a double crochet decrease, followed by 12 double crochet stitches. Work a double crochet decrease over the next 30 stitches, followed by 12 double crochet stitches. Slip stitch to join. There are 61 stitches.
-
7
Work 34 double crochet stitches to begin the second round. Follow with a double crochet decrease, and double crochet in each of the next two stitches. Work a triple double crochet cluster, and then double crochet decrease and double crochet in each of the next two stitches. Complete round two with 12 double crochet, and join with a slip stitch. There are a total of 55 stitches.
-
8
Double crochet in 34 stitches to begin the third round. Next, double crochet decrease, and double crochet. In the middle stitch of a double crochet decrease, work a double crochet decrease and double crochet, followed by a double crochet decrease and double crochet in the next stitch. End the round with 12 double crochet stitches, and join with a slip stitch. There are a total of 52 stitches.
-
9
Begin the final shoe top round with 22 double crochet stitches, followed by a half double crochet stitch. Work 28 double crochet stitches and half double crochet. Join with a slip stitch. There are a total of 52 stitches. Make the left shoe top on the left shoe sole by turning the sole to work in the opposite direction.
Strap
-
10
Slip stitch in the next single crochet, and chain 18 for strap base. Work 14 treble crochets beginning in the fifth chain from the hook. Turn.
-
11
Make a button hole by skipping two stitches and joining with a slip stitch in the next stitch. Tie off.
-
12
Sew a shank-style pearl button to the shoe where the strap meets the opposite side.

Tips & Warnings
Every needle-worker has a slightly different touch. Gauge your stitches to the established pattern by measuring against the following: nine stitches equal 1 inch; four double crochet rows equal 1 inch.
