How to Make Music Notes on a Keyboard Without Side Numbers

The numeric keypad, located on the right side of a standard keyboard, can be used in conjunction with the "Alt" key to insert special characters in text. To create a music note you would typically hold down the "Alt" key and enter "13" or "14" on the keypad. Many laptops omit the numeric keypad in favor of saving space, but you can still create the music symbol, or other special characters, using other methods.

Instructions

  1. Using Function Keys

    • 1

Hold down the function key on your keyboard. It may be labeled as "Function" or "Fn." Press "Num Lock" to activate the number lock function.

    • 2

      Hold the "Alt" key.

    • 3

Press the "1" and "4" or the "1" and "3" function keys; these usually appear over the letters on the right side of the keyboard. The number row at the top of the keyboard will not work. Release the "Alt" and function key and a music note will appear.

    Using Character Map

    • 4

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and "System Tools." Select "Character Map" from the System Tools folder.

    • 5

Scroll down to the symbols section of the character map and double-click the music note.

    • 6

Click "Copy" to copy the symbol to your clipboard. Open the document or text field in which you want to insert the music note, and press "Ctrl" and "V" to paste the music note symbol.
