How to Grow Delphinium Belladonna From Seed
Hybrid delphiniums that are part of the Belladonna group (Delphinium x belladonna) are flowering perennials, hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 3 to 7. They bloom during the summer months; however, if you sow the seeds outdoors--which is typically done in the fall--expect your delphiniums to bloom the second year. To get a head start on your delphinium flowers, start them indoors in the fall and then transplant them outdoors after the last frost in the spring. They will then bloom the first summer. 1
Store delphinium seeds in an air-tight container and place it in your refrigerator for one week. Chilling the seeds helps them germinate.
-
2
Moisten high-quality potting soil and fill a seed tray near to the rim with the moist soil.
-
-
3
Sow two or three delphinium seeds in each section and cover them lightly with additional moist soil. Place the tray in a shady but warm location, such as on top of your refrigerator, until germination, which should take approximately two to four weeks. Keep the soil moist during this time.
-
4
Move the germinated plants next to a sunny window and continue to maintain moist soil conditions. Once the plants reach four to six inches tall, pull out the weakest seedling in each section, if applicable.
-
5
Transplant the delphiniums into 4-inch planting pots, one seedling for each pot. Fill the pots with the high-quality potting soil. Take the delphiniums out from their current trays, keeping the soil intact. Plant the delphiniums into the larger pots so they are still at the same depth as before.
