How to Troubleshoot a WMI

WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) is a tool designed by Microsoft for Windows system management and development. WMI is used by system administrators and program developers to manage, configure, and monitor performance of applications installed on a computer. If WMI is not working properly on a system, an expert must troubleshoot the issue. The issue can stem from corrupted system files or hardware issues. Microsoft provides free tools for troubleshooting, and you can manually troubleshoot any WMI code, but you must understand the code and WMI's relationship with Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) before you make any changes.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a Web browser and download the Microsoft WMI troubleshooting utility. Double-click the EXE file within the WMI utility downloaded zip file. This runs the utility. The utility scans your system for any corrupted files or internal Windows problems such as hardware and driver errors.

Click the Windows "Start" button and type "event viewer" in the search text box. Press "Enter." The Event Viewer is a Windows system logging utility. The utility logs any permissions or operating system errors, so you can use it to troubleshoot the WMI. View the log errors for any issues related to the WMI.

Check your WMI scripts for any permission or syntax errors. These two types of errors are typically responsible for any script files that fail to run. Script files are written using VBScript or Windows Powershell. You must know these two languages to change the code in the scripts and recognize syntax errors.

Reboot the computer after you make any changes to the system. After you make changes, rebooting releases any "crashed" files that might cause WMI issues. Changes to the system do not take effect until after the system reboots.
