A lack of power could be the result of a poor connection.

Desktop computers are ideal for work or personal computing from the home or office. Since desktop PCs generally stay in one place, they're often the prime place to store personal information and important documents and photos, which is why it's so distressing when your computer won't power up. If your desktop doesn't seem to have power, it's likely a poor connection with your outlet that can be easily remedied. If not, your hardware might be causing the problem, resulting in the need for service and repair to recover your information.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your wall outlet or the power strip your computer's power cord is connected to and ensure that the cord is plugged in securely. If it's loose, secure the cord to restore power back to your computer. If you're using a power strip, check both the connection from the computer to the strip and the strip to the wall outlet, and make sure the strip is turned on.

    • 2

Secure the cord into the back of your computer tower. Power cords can sometimes become loose when if the computer is moved around, which can result in a loss of power. If the cord is loose, plug it in snugly.

    • 3

Move the computer tower to another outlet and plug it in, then turn the tower on. If it powers up, the outlet you're using is the problem and likely needs to be rewired and has lost power. If you cannot move the tower, plug another electronic item into the wall outlet or power strip you use for your computer power. If another item, such as a phone charger, portable DVD player or any other electrical item powers up, the power cord or the connection into your computer is likely the problem and needs to be replaced.

Replace the power cord into your computer. If you replace the power cord and have checked the outlets and you still don't receive any power, the problem is hardware-related and you might need new components, specifically a motherboard. Take your computer to a competent computer repair technician to obtain component replacements that can restore your desktop to working condition.
