How to Catalog a Website

Catalogue your site to get more visits.

A number of online directories exist for websites, particularly blogs. If you have a website you want to get out to a larger audience, you could try cataloging it in one or more such directories. This might send you some direct traffic, as visitors of the directory find your site, and it might help in your search engine optimization, by providing an additional link to your site.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the best category for your website to go in. Some directories allow you to submit to multiple categories, which is useful if your site covers more than one topic. However, decide on a primary category, for those directories that only allow you to submit to one category. To do this, consider factors like how popular those categories are, and where your target audience is more likely to look. For example, if your site is on antique chair repair, you may have better look in “Antiques” than in “DIY.”

Open up a text editor and write out a description for your site. Many directories give you space to say a few words about your website, and this is a key way to entice people to click the link and visit you. Focus on benefits over description -- why should someone visit your site? What will they get from it? What is unique about your site. A paragraph of 75-100 words will suffice.

Get a list of the directories that you want to submit your site to. Search Google for terms like “Online website directories,” “blog directories” and “website catalogs.” Two places worth considering in particular are dmoz.org, a large and selective online directory, and dir.yahoo.com, Yahoo's popular directory. Note that Yahoo charges a fee for entry to the catalog.

Visit each of the sites on your list in turn and locate their “Submit a site” or similar link. Then simply fill out the online form that appears.
