Don't let unsightly stems ruin your gorgeous floral arrangements.

If you've ever planned a formal party or helped a friend decorate for her wedding, you know how floral arrangements quickly take on a life of their own. But no matter how stunning the flowers on top, unsightly stems at the bottom of glass vases detract from the elegance of the arrangement. For a formal affair, satin fabric makes an effective vase cover and offers a fanciful, iridescent sheen. Covering your flower vases with satin fabric isn't difficult, but it does require minor planning and basic crafting skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the vases from top to bottom. Add two inches to the measurement and record the total on a piece of scratch paper.

    • 2

Measure the circumference of the vase. Add two inches and record the number on a separate piece of scratch paper.

    • 3

Cut patches of satin fabric according to the measurements. Once finished, you must have as many rectangles of satin fabric as you have vases that need covering.

    • 4

Wrap construction paper around the vases, securing the two shorter ends together with a three strips of double-sided tape. Cut off any excess paper from the top and bottom. A base layer of construction paper helps the satin covering lay smoothly against the vase.

    • 5

Spread the patches of satin fabric flat. Fold the top edge one inch down and fold the bottom edge one inch up. Secure the folds with three or four strips of double-sided tape. Folding the edges conceals any fraying or jagged scissor marks, making your satin wraps look polished and professional. Repeat this process on either short end of each satin rectangle. When finished, all four edges of every satin rectangle should fold one inch inward.

    • 6

Wrap the satin around the flower vase and overlap the two short ends together with double-sided tape between the two, just as you did with the construction paper.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tie a coordinating organza ribbon around the top or middle of each flower vase after securing the satin covering.

  • Never use glue or any other permanent adhesive on the satin as this causes rippling and pulls the material.
