How to Make Washi Paper Stained Glass Jewelry

Stained glass comes from painting and then firing the glass in a kiln to fuse the paint with the glass. Light shines through the glass, creating colored beams. Washi paper is thin, handmade paper that allows light to shine through, giving it an appearance of stained glass. Since washi paper comes in many designs and colors, including gold and silver, they are already works of art. Add them to clear glass and you have washi stained glass. Make jewelry, such as necklaces or earrings, out of the stained glass washi designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the glass on the work surface and set the bottle cap on top of the glass. Trace around the cap using the chalk to get a circle.

    • 2

Cut along the chalk line using the glass cutter. Hold the cutter at a 45 degree angle and press lightly with the cutter. Push the circle out from the glass, being careful not to break the glass.

    • 3

Paint a thin layer of craft glue on one side of the glass using the paint brush.

    • 4

Place the washi paper on the work surface with the colored side up.

    • 5

Press the circle, with glue side down, to the washi paper. Press it to the part of the washi paper you want for your stained glass design. Hold the glue in place for a few moments to make sure it sticks.

    • 6

Cut off any excess paper as close to the glass as possible so that none of the paper sticks out from the edges.

    • 7

Paint the back of the washi paper with a thin layer of craft glue to help seal it to the glass. Let the glue dry before continuing.

    • 8

Place a dab of super glue on the flat part of the glue-on bail. Press the bail to the back of the washi paper so that the top of the flat part touches the top edge of the circle. The loop sticks up from the top.

    • 9

Slip the chain through the loop to complete the necklace.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make the glass any shape you desire. Hand draw the design on the glass, or trace objects to make interesting shapes. Glass is not easy to cut, and it will take practice to cut difficult shapes.

  • Use a craft glue that dries clear or you won't see the washi paper.

  • Use small scissors to cut the paper or a retractable knife.

  • Glue earring backs to the glass to make earrings.

  • Glass this thin is very fragile. Be careful when cutting the glass. You can use thicker glass, but it is more noticeable and looks less like the paper is part of the glass.
