1
Sand the wood with 180-grit sandpaper to roughen the surface. Wipe the wood with a tack cloth to remove the sanding residue, then wipe with a damp cloth.
-
2
Mix the can of stain with a paint stirrer. Avoid shaking it up, as air bubbles can develop.
-
-
3
Fold a soft, lint-free cloth in half. Dip a corner of the cloth in the can of Valspar stain.
-
4
Rub the stain on the wood using long, even strokes. Coat the wood generously with the stain. Work in small sections so the stain doesn’t dry too quickly.
-
5
Wipe over each section after allowing the stain to soak into the wood for three to five minutes. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe the wood using small, circular motions.
-
6
Continue this process until the all of the wood surface is coated with the stain. Let the stain dry for at least 30 minutes before applying a sealer or topcoat.
