How to Decorate a Bedroom With Parasols

Create a designer space in your room with parasols.

It is easy to enhance modern room design with parasols, or umbrellas used for shade, as an accent. A bedroom decor scheme that features parasols as an element provides an old-fashioned or romantic feel. Use an array of small parasols, ranging from solid colors to floral patterns, to create a whimsical, feminine look in your bedroom.

Instructions

1. Choose at least half a dozen parasols, with colors and patterns that fit into you bedroom's palette and overall design scheme. Decide on one color for a monochromatic look, or opt for a contrasting hue for a more dramatic style. Make sure the style of parasol matches your room's theme and visual aesthetic. For example, although Japanese parasols can be particularly colorful, with intricate patterns and pictures, the artful umbrellas may not match a country-themed room. Instead, opt to pair a Japanese parasol with a contemporary or eclectic world-themed bedroom.

2. Place your parasols strategically around the room as accents. Open some of the parasols; leave others closed, and prop them against a wall or in a corner. Make sure the colorful or patterned part of the umbrella is facing outward for all to see. Use a single parasol, or try multiple parasol arrangements with two or more propped against each other. Choose bedroom spaces such as the top of a dresser or a bookshelf for placement.

3. Hang parasols from hooks on the ceiling to add visual interest.

Tips & Warnings

• Use new parasols for a modern, contemporary feel, or antique parasols for a romantic, vintage look. Find older parasols at antique stores or flea markets.

• Change the parasols seasonally to vary the look of your room. Use colorful floral parasols in the spring and parasols with images of autumn leaves in the fall.

• If you hang parasols from the wall or ceiling of your bedroom, make sure there is no danger they will fall. Test your parasols to make sure they are secure. If needed, tie the parasols to the hooks with colorful string or ribbon.
