Thousands of containers are shipped each day and all need to be tracked accurately.

Roll-off boxes are large containers in which goods are shipped or trucked from one location to another. Many companies ship thousands of goods this way and they can find it a challenge to keep track of them. You can check your roll-off boxes manually, but doing it this way leaves you open to possible mistakes. A better way to track your roll-off boxes is to use modern technology.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine how much inventory you have. Before you can track your roll-off boxes, you need to know how many you have.

    • 2

Make a note of all the places your inventory is being shipped to and how much of your inventory is going to each location. You can use a simple excel sheet to organize this type of data.

    • 3

Assign a number to each box in your inventory that you can track back to your spreadsheet telling you what each box contains. You can do this yourself or you can hire a logistics company to do it for you.

    • 4

Hire a reputable logistics or shipping company that uses handheld computers to scan the boxes. Companies that use this type of technology scan the numbers of their boxes or containers and these numbers are then transmitted to a computer system that uses GPS to track the location of these containers throughout their journey. GPS uses satellites to track the location of objects on earth.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your containers are extremely heavy, for instance more 30 cubic yards, you will need to ensure that you engage a company that can legally haul containers of that size.
