How to Make Ribbon Leis With Soda Caps

Save your used bottle caps to create a lei.

While leis are traditionally made with flowers, not all of these celebratory neck pieces need to be floral. In fact, you can create your own one-of-a-kind lei using little more than a ribbon and some metal soda bottle caps. When you're finished, you'll have created a lei that's unlike any other and will last a lifetime. Plus, you'll be giving a helping hand to the environment by keeping soda caps out of landfills.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a scrap piece of wood on a flat surface. Set a soda cap right-side up onto this plank.

    • 2

Hold a nail over the center of the soda cap, and give it a quick tap with a hammer to send the nail through the cap. Remove the nail and soda cap from the wood, and separate them. You now have a hole in the cap to string it onto your lei. Repeat this process with the rest of the soda caps you want to include on the neck piece.

    • 3

Cut a piece of ribbon to the desired size of the lei, including enough length to tie a bow at the end. This should be about 45 inches long for adults, and slightly smaller for children.

    • 4

Tie a knot in the ribbon, about 5 inches from the end. String a soda cap onto the ribbon, threading it down all the way to the knot. Continue threading soda caps onto the ribbon, all facing the same direction, until you reach about 6 inches from the other end. Tie a knot to secure the caps in place.

    • 5

Drape the lei around your neck. Tie the two ribbon ends together in a bow to hold your lei in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of threading the entire ribbon lei with soda caps, include some extra elements in between the caps. Add beads to the lei, or tie knots in between each soda cap to separate them. You can also place two soda caps on the lei with their open sides facing each other, to make the metal pieces look like beads.

  • Use adult supervision when working with a hammer and nail.
